Tooth Extraction Aftercare Tips

Your tooth may be removed entirely for various reasons.  The process is short, and an anesthetic will be used to numb the pain. After the procedure, gauze will be used to control the bleeding.

The aftercare tips that your dentist will give you will depend on the type of tooth removed. If the tips given are not followed as expected, there could be complications. Proper care after the extraction reduces risks of infection or occurrence of dry socket. It also plays a huge part when you will be getting your dental implant procedures.  The healing process should last for about 7 to 10 days.

The following are tips on what you should do and not do after an extraction.

1.Icing

To reduce swelling, put ice packs on the side of your face where the extraction was done. For a simple procedure, you might not experience any swelling. For extreme extractions, the swelling is not usually gradual but can happen for 2 to 3 days.

They should be used during the first 24 hours of the extraction since that's when they are effective. Apply the ice packs on your cheeks for 10 to 15 minutes then rest for about 5 minutes before placing it again.  Repeat the process for about 2 hours.

2.Rest

Do fewer activities during the first 24 hours. Go to bed earlier than you usually do. Elevate your head while sleeping. You can use pillows for this.

3.Reduce Bleeding

Bite on the gauze given to you by your dentist. The gauze will help stop the bleeding. Avoid chewing it and change it after every hour. If the bleeding doesn't stop after several hours, place a wet tea bag and bite. The tannic acid in it will speed up the clotting process.

4.Pain

Take the painkillers prescribed to you by your dentist. Do not drive after taking them if you feel drowsy.  Our specialists in Chicago Illinois advise you to consult your dentist if there is any need for over the counter drugs. If the pain persists days later, visit your dentist as soon as possible to check if there is an infection.

5.Diet

Ensure your diet consists of soft and healthy food.  Drink a lot of fluids and avoid using any straws. They will destroy the blood clot. Do not take hot liquids to avoid the occurrence of swelling. You should not drink alcohol or smoke. In case the clot is obstructed in any way, visit your dentist to avoid a dry socket, which can be painful.

6.Cleaning

Start rinsing your mouth using one tablespoon of salt very gently to avoid damaging the clot. Rinse at least four times a day. Dentists in Chicago recommend you continue with your dental hygiene routine to avoid infections. Do not use any toothpaste while brushing, for it could dislodge the clot while rinsing and spitting out.
